Pop singer Lesley Gore was already well known to audiences when she made her appearance on Batman in January 1967. Unlike Frank Sinatra and many other performers, she managed to land a role on this series because her uncle was none other than series producer Howie Horowitz. Lesley appeared in the episodes “That Darn Catwoman” on Thursday, 19 January, and “Scat Darn Catwoman” which aired on Wednesday, 25 January.
A major highlight of the 19 January 1967 episode was Ms. Gore’s rendition of her single, “California Nights.” This song is her last major Top 40 hit to date. She also had another song for the 25 January episode as well.
Born in New York, and raised in New Jersey, Lesley was discovered by record producer Quincy Jones in 1963. She had a Number One hit with “It’s My Party.” Lesley soon followed up with other songs, such as “You Don’t Know Me.” Batman was her first television and film appearance in which she was not appearing as herself; she began her film appearances in 1965.
Lesley Gore went on to finish college, and had remained busy in the music industry. She died on 16 February 2015.
